What is Konka, and why is it famous?

Konka is an exclusive restaurant and nightclub that is located in Pimville, Soweto. The establishment, usually frequented by the A-Listers in South Africa’s showbiz, used to go by the name Old Icon Soweto nightclub.

In 2021, the club was purchased by a new owner, and its name was changed to Konka. Since its rebranding and launch, Konka has quickly gained popularity and is one of the favourite spots for the rich in South Africa showbiz to hang out, party and splurge.

The revelers are often served expensive liquor and entertained by A-Lister entertainers in South Africa’s showbiz. Some of the stars who have been spotted at the club so far include AKA, DJ Maphorisa, Cassper Nyovest, Black Motion, the late Ricky Rick, TKZee, and even Julius Malema.

According to sources, Konka’s owner is a young black entrepreneur called Kutlwano Pitso. Here is everything we know about him so far.

What does Kutlwano Pitso do?

Kutwalano Pitso is an entrepreneur and businessman with investments in the hospitality and foods and drinks industry.

Before launching his lines of businesses, Kutlwano did a couple of jobs. His first hustle after school was selling perfumes and fragrances.

He later got employed in 2010 as a researcher for a Johannesburg-based company called Foshizi which specializes in market research and strategy services.

He left Foshizi for M-Net, where he started as a marketing assistant and got promoted to Marketing Executive, then Brand Manager.

Wanting to establish his brand name and venture into business, Kutlwano Pitso left M-Net and, in 2016, kickstarted his first successful venture. Since then, there has been no stopping for the entrepreneur.

Is the owner of Konka educated?

Yes, Konka’s owner, Kutlwano Pitso, is well educated. He holds a Bachelor of Administration degree in Marketing and Brand Management from the IMM Graduate School in Johannesburg.

Perhaps part of the reason why he has been successful so far is that he has a background in business literacy.

Where does the owner of Konka come from?

Little is known about the origins of Kutlwano Pitso, although sources indicate that he was born and raised in Soweto, where he has established his businesses.

In a past interview with Andile Khumalo, Pitso explained the importance of knowing a place before starting a business.

Yes, Kutlwano Pitso owns other establishments besides Konka.

In 2016, the business mogul founded Moja Café, which is located in Orlando East, Soweto, a few minutes away from Konka.

Moja Café, which incorporated a restaurant, car wash, and a lounge, has been temporarily out of service for some time now.
