Talks are underway in Eswatini about King Misuzulu kaZwelithini possibly choosing another wife at the kaNgwane Reed Dance, which will take place in the Swazi kingdom on Saturday.

Sources have told Scrolla.Africa that King Mswati III suggested that his nephew, King Misuzulu, and one of King Mswati III’s sons select wives from the maidens who attend the annual dance.

This event will also see King Mswati III officially choose Nomcebo, the youngest daughter of former South African president Jacob Zuma, as his 16th wife.

“The plan is for the three of them to choose wives from the maidens attending this year’s Reed Dance,” a source revealed.

However, the source said some members of the Zulu royal family are not happy with this proposal because they believe King Misuzulu has not yet officially married Queen kaMayisela and Queen kaMyeni.

King Mswati III has already paid lobola to the Zuma family, estimated at R2-million, for 21-year-old Nomcebo.

Zuma is reportedly unhappy about the marriage. He was under the impression that one of King Mswati III’s sons would marry Nomcebo.

Nomcebo has reportedly left her university studies to prepare for her marriage to the last absolute monarch in Africa.

King Misuzulu travelled to Eswatini this week to visit King Mswati III before the Reed Dance.

Last month, during the ukuthela amanzi sacred ritual ceremony at kwaKhangela Amankengane, King Misuzulu hinted that he might choose another wife during the Zulu Reed Dance, which will take place on 13 and 14 September at the Nyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma.

The event will mark 40 years since the ceremony was revived in the Zulu Kingdom in 1984.

“I call on all maidens to come in numbers as we will be celebrating a milestone of 40 years since the Reed Dance was revived. Who knows? Maybe I might choose one of you to be my wife,” King Misuzulu said in July.

Since taking the throne, he has faced criticism for not selecting a wife during previous Reed Dances.

Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the traditional prime minister to the Zulu monarch, responded to media inquiries by saying: “Why is it your business that the king is taking another wife? I don’t think it has anything to do with the media that His Majesty is taking another wife.”
