Ahead of their DStv Premiership fixture against TS Galaxy, Jamie Webber says SuperSport United need to be more focussed and not lose concentration at key times in matches.
SuperSport lost 3-2 to Orlando Pirates midweek, despite having been 2-0 up in the fixture.
Webber says they should have kept hold of the ball for longer periods, and they need to learn from the loss.
“The game against Pirates, we went in confidently,” Webber told the club’s media department.
“And I mean, we scored two early goals, which was good for us. But I feel like we lost a bit of concentration.
“And I feel like that’s when we rewarded them with the two penalties. And I feel like, that’s one of the lessons we should learn from that, to not lose concentration, because I mean, difficult time to let them score, just before halftime, and I feel like we should learn from that.
“And it would be better for us to have kept the ball for longer periods in the game, to stop them from scoring because they can’t score if they don’t have the ball. So I feel like we should take care of the ball more when we are in those critical phases.
Webber says they need to take those lessons into the Galaxy game.
“Playing away against TS Galaxy, a very difficult game, a very tough opponent, also a good footballing team,” he continued.
“I know they haven’t been doing too well the season, they’re also fighting for points and very difficult to play against a team that is down there, laying at the bottom, because those are the type of teams that give their all always and work hard for each other.
“So very tough game. But I feel like we also have to step it up. Because I mean, we come from a loss, so I feel like there’s a bit of inconsistency on our side.
“But I think we have an opportunity obviously to correct that and get back to winning ways. I think that the determining factor for SuperSport, for us, to grab all three points is definitely hard work, and like I said, concentration.
“I feel like at times in the game, we lose concentration like we did in the Orlando Pirates game. That’s when they got the two penalties. So I feel like concentration as well as keeping the ball more so that so that we can create more opportunities and score more goals.
The SuperSport midfielder also believes he can improve his own form this season, and he’d like to create more scoring opportunities.
“My season, personally, I feel like I’ve been inconsistent,” Webber added.
“I haven’t played my best each and every game like I wanted to. I feel like I’m playing one game well, one game off.
“But that’s definitely part of my mental aspect that I have to work on. And most importantly, after the break, the FIFA week, I definitely want to work on scoring more goals, getting into the position to score more goals and taking more shots.
“Because I mean that is one of my strengths, so I feel like I have to work on that.”
