Wasteful Bafana Bafana draw with Panama in Durban

Panama’s Edgar Bárcenas and Bafana Bafana’s Oswin Appollis were on target as South Africa and the Central Americans played to a 1-1 draw in a match where the hosts largely controlled proceedings but couldn’t find a winner.

South Africa started on the front foot, pressing high and keeping possession in the early stages. Panama’s first shot came after pressure on Sphephelo Sithole, but it lacked the power to trouble Ronwen Williams.

BAFANA BAFANA CONTROL WITHOUT REWARD

The home side enjoyed most of the ball early on, but Panama remained compact and organised, closing spaces quickly in and around the box. Bafana’s first real attack in the 4th minute was shut down, while a clever flick from Themba Zwane later created an opening that Aubrey Modiba couldn’t take advantage of.

As the half progressed, Bafana continued to push. Oswin Appollis forced a save from inside the area, and a high press led to a big chance for Lyle Foster, who rounded the goalkeeper but saw his effort drift wide from a tight angle.

Panama then made their opportunity count in the 23rd minute. Bárcenas finished low into the corner from inside the box to give the visitors a 1-0 lead against the run of play.

Bafana responded well before halftime. Tshepang Moremi came close with a shot across goal, while a well-worked move involving Modiba, Appollis and Foster was denied by the alert substitute goalkeeper. Teboho Mokoena also tested the keeper with a powerful strike that was well saved.

SECOND HALF RESPONSE BUT NO WINNER

The equaliser arrived early in the second half. In the 48th minute, Appollis struck a clean half-volley into the corner following a headed assist from Khuliso Mudau to make it 1-1.

Bafana Bafana continued to dominate possession and territory but struggled to break down a disciplined Panama defence. The final pass and finishing touch were often missing in key moments.

There was a late scare in the 80th minute when Yanis hit the post, but Bafana held firm. Despite their overall control, they couldn’t find a second goal, and the match finished 1-1.
