WARNING: Severe thunderstorms expected to hit Gauteng

Published

An alert has been issued to residents in Gauteng and other parts of the country over severe thunderstorms which are expected to hit on Thursday, 03 November.

Warnings of excessive rains and a high probability of flooding will likely continue through the weekend.

Severe thunderstorms and lightning warnings have been issued for Gauteng and the Free State in particular.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) have highlighted the Orange Level 6 warning, which is high, for the Free State.

Continual rainfall on already wet ground will lead to excessive flow of water, which can result in flash flooding in informal and formal settlements.

In addition, poor driving conditions, especially in low-laying areas can cause a danger as roads can wash away.

The severe thunderstorms are expected to last well into the weekend due to a cut-off low pressure system, bringing cold and wet weather conditions.

Given the consistent loadshedding that South Africans are enduring, it’s advised that people exercise caution when using fires or candles to light and keep warm.

Further updates will be issued by the SAWS, but for now the alert includes extremely windy conditions, heavy rains and thunderstorms.
