Global retail giant Walmart has officially announced its expansion into the South African market, with its first stores set to open before the end of the year.
The move is a strategic effort to provide South African consumers with greater access to affordable, quality products.
The expansion follows the company’s first Growth Summit, which took place in April, where Walmart engaged with suppliers from 12 African countries and recruited new small- and medium-sized African businesses.
“Walmart’s South African stores will offer a wide range of merchandise, including fresh groceries, household essentials, clothing, and technology,” said Kath McLay, President and CEO of Walmart International.
She noted that the company will partner with local suppliers to bring its “everyday low prices” to the market while celebrating local culture.
In addition to its physical stores, the company confirmed that it will introduce digital shopping services to enhance the customer experience.
Miles Van Rensburg, President and CEO of Massmart, expressed his excitement about the launch.
“We’re thrilled to begin this journey, introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers, and communities,” he said.
He emphasised the company’s core philosophy of providing value, stating that “every rand matters when it comes to price.”
While specific store locations have not yet been disclosed, development sites are already in progress.
