  • A South African businessman accused of murder, Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala, has appeared in court to apply for bail.
  • Matlala was allegedly in contact with a co-accused on the day a top police official publicly claimed the justice system had been captured by criminals.
  • The hearing has been postponed until 8 September to allow the State to respond to new allegations made by the defence.

Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala, a businessman facing murder charges and implicated in high-profile police corruption allegations, was back in the dock at the Alexandra Regional Court on Tuesday as he sought to be released on bail.

The court heard that Matlala had been in secret communication with a North West businessman, Mogotsi, on the same day KwaZulu-Natal’s top police official, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, held a press conference.

JUST IN: The bail hearing of alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has been postponed to September 8.

At the conference, Mkhwanazi made explosive claims that South Africa’s justice system had been “captured” by criminals and questionable businessmen, implicating both Matlala and Mogotsi.

Matlala, a politically connected “tenderpreneur,” is at the centre of several prominent cases.

He is accused of being involved in botched assassination attempts on taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and DJ Vettys, also known as Seunkie Mokubung. Furthermore, in June of last year, he secured a R360-million police health tender, which has since been cancelled. This occurred despite him being under investigation for his alleged role in the Tembisa Hospital graft scandal.

He is co-accused in the current case alongside his wife, Tsakani Matlala, Nthabiseng Nzama, Tlego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana.

The hearing was postponed to allow the State to respond to new allegations Matlala has made against the investigating team as part of his bail application.

The bail proceedings are scheduled to resume on 8 September.
