Veteran goalkeeper Virgil Vries has been spotted at AmaZulu’s training ground [King Park Stadium] in Durban with indications that he could soon reunite with Brandon Truter.

The former Maritzburg United and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper’s contract with Swallows came to an end, and the club opted against renewing it.

Truter and his AmaZulu technical team will assess him with the view of adding him to their goalkeeping department.

“Virgil is here for assessment. He also had a knock with his national team when they played the [AFCON] qualifiers, so he is on a medical. We will assess the injury and see if it’s feasible to sign him. If it is, then I’ll have a good goalkeeping department,” Truter responded when asked about Vries’ availability at training.

The Namibian footballer joined the Dube Birds in 201 after parting company with the club’s Soweto nemesis, Kaizer Chiefs.

Vries struggled to command a regular place at Swallows, as he faced stiff competition with the veteran and experienced goalkeeper Thela Ngobeni and Mamelodi Sundowns’ loanee Jody February.

His last appearance for Swallows was back in September last year in a match against Cape Town City. He kept a clean sheet against the Citizens in what would be his last game for The Birds.

In the 2021/22 season, he only featured for Swallows seven times. The 31-year-old has recovered from a knee injury that kept him on the sidelines.

He went for an operation and has been doing his rehabilitation. The Brave Warriors goalie could provide competition for AmaZulu first-choice keeper Veli Mothwa. They also have Olwethu Thabiso Mzimela and Jean-Noel Amonome

Vries comes with experience having played for Golden Arrows, Carara Kicks, Maritzburg United, and Baroka.

Meanwhile, Truter confirmed Sibusiso Mabiliso had signed with the club after parting ways with Kaizer Chiefs recently.

Mabiliso is due for a medical on Thursday and could feature for the club when AmaZulu face Cape Town City in the MTN8 Cup quarterfinal.

“S’bu has been signed, he has been added to the roaster. You know the quality and value he brings. He has a medical to pass. That will tell us if he can play over the weekend.”
