Duduzane Zuma, son of former state president Jacob Zuma, said he is on a mission of “cleaning up” the City of Durban.

“Simply put, beautifying the City, cleaning it up, making it livable is the first step to progression. If we leave our people in a dire situation of filth, it becomes a norm,” he said.

“When you look at informal settlements and townships there’s a lot of filth and unfortunately people have become normalized to these sorts of situations.”

Zuma was speaking to The Witness on Thursday morning where he joined senior officials of eThekwini Municipality and other celebrities in a spring clean-up of Durban’s inner City.

Zuma, who is also the ANC’s branch chairperson for eThekwini’s Ward 11, has been spotted numerous times over the past year involved in cleaning campaigns.

Dressed in black jeans, a black shirt, and protective gloves, the freshly shaven Zuma was stopped countless times by people who wanted to take pictures with him.

In-between that, Zuma was picking up dirt on King Dinizulu Park, shovelling grime on the side of the MNR Taxi rank and raking rubbish on an empty plot of land near the rank that has been taken over by vagrants.

“If we think we are going to get to the promise land of doing the right thing, of cleaning up our country and not just the dirt but everything that makes this country work, it needs to start somewhere,” said Zuma.

Zuma said he believes the grime and dirt in communities was a down to a societal failure.

“Yes, there are rates and taxpayers in our country and deserve the services they pay for but if those services are not coming due to the lack of resources or mismanagement or whatever the issues are, we cannot wait for people to come help us, we need to help ourselves,” he said.

On his political ambitions, Zuma said he was focusing on “community activism” at the moment.

Zuma said if leaders cannot deliver on the small things, they cannot be trusted to deliver on the big things.

“If you break down the politics and remove the party colours that everyone wears; we all from the same places, we all from the same hoods. Let’s pull together,” he said.

“Once it comes to voting and contestation seasons, that time will come. As long as we are delivering to our constituencies which are our people, inside and outside of our communities, in the CBD (central business district) where we are not from, that’s what matters. From there everything else falls into place.”
