Van Wyk Opens Up On Chiefs’ Purchase Offer

JVW FC owner, Janine Van Wyk has revealed that there were talks between her Hollywoodbets Super League side and DStv Premiership giants Kaizer Chiefs about possibly buying the women’s franchise.

Van Wyk spoke to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 99 of the newspaper, where she reveals the Naturena-based outfit did not meet JVW’s requirements.

There is pressure for DStv Premiership sides to have a women’s teams, especially those that have ambitions of competing in CAF inter club competitions, with CAF set to make it part of the entry criteria to have a women’s team.

This season has seen TS Galaxy join the list of professional sides to have a women’s team in the highest women’s league in this country.

Chiefs have been saying since last year that they are in the process of assessing how they can join the likes of Galaxy, Mamelodi Sundowns and Royal AM in entering the women’s game.

Banyana Banyana record holder, Van Wyk has now revealed that talks with Chiefs’ leadership were rushed and in the end she and her leadership team of the Blue Diamonds opted against joining forces with Amakhosi.

“Well there were some negotiations with Chiefs but they just didn’t meet our requirements and needs,” Van Wyk told iDiski Times.

“At the end of the day, it’s important that the club and the players are taken care of and it’s not just about people coming in and buying a franchise and taking over our players, when the players are representing a very top quality football club but the players are not taken care of and that for me is important.

“Not to say that they wouldn’t have but what we had developed in 10 years we also had to look at and say are we ready to give that away? Are we really giving that up because of one club that wants to buy a franchise?

“So we decided to pull back. Obviously, the negotiations were a little bit rushed. We obviously had meetings and so on, but it just didn’t go as planned and we thought that it would be just a rushed deal instead of a  realistic, proper planned out deal that would benefit both parties.

“We just didn’t go ahead with it and we managed to just stay with our franchise and continue to develop with our players.”
