‘Uzalo’ hit by behind-the-scenes payment drama as producers pause filming

Popular SABC1 drama Uzalo is reportedly experiencing production setbacks amid claims that the crew behind the scenes have not been paid.

According to sources close to the show, filming has been temporarily halted due to financial issues, leaving the production team frustrated.

While delays aren’t new to those involved, an insider revealed this particular situation is unusual because only the production crew is affected, while actors reportedly received their payments.

“The situation of nonpayment happens from time to time, but this time around it’s only the production team that didn’t get paid. The actors got paid. I mean, we have got used to it,” the source told TshisaLIVE.

In a leaked internal communication, production company Stained Glass confirmed the temporary shutdown, citing financial strain and challenges in cash flow.

“Dear team, We regret to inform you that, due to severe cash flow constraints, we are compelled to pause production with immediate effect,” the message read.

“Please know that we are actively engaging with the SABC to resolve the matter as swiftly as possible. We understand the impact this has on each of you and remain committed to keeping you informed as the situation develops.”

The note, signed off by key producers Gugu, Theo, and Pepsi, expressed gratitude to the crew for their professionalism and support during the difficult period.

Despite these reports and the internal memo, the SABC has denied any disruptions. Spokesperson Mmoni Ngubane dismissed the claims, saying:

“There is no production break on Uzalo and production continues as scheduled. The SABC remains committed to its partnership with the production company Stained Glass and values the continued contribution of the cast and crew.”

Ngubane also reiterated that the broadcaster does not comment on contractual details publicly.
