Belgium top-flight league leaders Royale Union Saint-Gilloise failed in a last-ditch attempt to sign Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster who has now secured a move to Westerlo.

Union, the affiliate club of Brighton and Hove Albion are currently on course to win the Jupiler Pro League and identified Foster as a potential signing to bolster their attacking options for the 2022/23 campaign.

iDiski Times has been reliably informed that they placed a bid to Vitória de Guimarães for the 21-year-old who enjoyed a breakout season in the Proximus League as he starred towards their title triumph and promotion to the top flight.

However, Westerlo had already agreed on a €1-million (R17-million) deal with a 15% sell-on clause for future sales, should he make another move from the newly-promoted side that has offered assurances of regular first-team football after stints at AS Monaco, Vitória and Cercle Brugge on loan over the past 24 months.

At Union, he would have likely faced fierce competition, with the club looking to add further firepower to the squad that look poised to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.

The former Orlando Pirates talent scored five goals and registered five assists in 26 appearances for the Westerlo last season during the season-long loan from Vitória
