Helen Zille – a self-proclaimed longtime Orlando Pirates fan – has shared her delight at her team’s win over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby on Saturday, 28 February.

The former Democratic Alliance leader, who is now the Joburg mayoral candidate, watched the match at a drinking hole in the city.

The Buccaneers beat their rivals 3-0 at the FNB Stadium.

On her social media platforms, Helen Zille shared a look at how she watched the Soweto Derby, supporting her favourite team, Orlando Pirates.

On Facebook, the 74-year-old posted pictures of her mingling with soccer fans at what appeared to be a tavern.

Wearing a personalised soccer supporter shirt, with the words “Helen for Mayor” across the back, the outspoken politician downed a beer, hugging and enjoying banter with fellow supporters.

Thank you Soweto! 🔥🇿🇦

On TikTok, Helen Zille celebrated the Orlando Pirates’ 3-0 victory with her own victory dance.

“Viva Buccaneers.💥”, she captioned the animated clip.

CLEVER MAYORAL CAMPAIGN?

Under her comments, many South Africans accused Helen Zille of trying to win public votes, particularly through South Africa’s heated rivalry between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs fans.

However, her old tweets reveal that “Gogo Zille” is indeed a longtime Buccaneers fan.
