Unhappy at work? What to do when you no longer enjoy your job

Waking up every morning and feeling like you no longer want to go to work can take a toll. When a job stops feeling rewarding, that frustration can follow you home and affect your overall well-being.

However, not every difficult period at work means it is time to resign. Sometimes, the problem is that the job has become repetitive, you feel overlooked, or you have lost sight of why you started in the first place, Psychology Today explains.

Before making a major career decision, it may be worth taking a closer look at what is making you unhappy at work.

Remind yourself why your work matters

It is easy to get caught up in emails, meetings and everyday tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture.

Try stepping back and asking what your work contributes. Perhaps you help customers, support colleagues, solve problems or create something useful.

Psychology Today states that looking at the purpose behind your role can sometimes change how you experience the less enjoyable parts of the job.

Look at what you have achieved

Feeling stuck can make it easy to overlook your own progress.

Take some time to think about what you have accomplished since starting your job. Consider projects you have completed, problems you have solved or relationships you have built with colleagues.

You could also set yourself a few meaningful goals. Having something new to work towards can make a routine role feel more engaging.

Are you being challenged enough?

Not enjoying your job does not always mean you dislike the work itself. You may simply feel underused.

If your responsibilities have become predictable or you are no longer learning anything new, speak to your manager about taking on different tasks or greater responsibility, advises the above-mentioned publication.

It may also be the right time to discuss your career ambitions and whether there is an opportunity to grow within the organisation.

Know when the problem is bigger

Sometimes, changing your approach or responsibilities is not enough.

If you genuinely cannot find meaning in your role, see no opportunities to develop and feel consistently unhappy, it may be time to consider whether the job is still right for you.

The important thing is to understand what is behind your dissatisfaction before making a decision. A difficult phase at work and a job that no longer fits your needs are not necessarily the same thing.
