A group of eight regional coordinators of the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party in KwaZulu-Natal has written to the national office asking it to organise a new structure to lead the province.

The coordinators are from eThekwini, Uthukela, Umkhanyakude, Ugu, Ilembe, Zululand, Harry Gwala and King Cetshwayo regions.

Party president Jacob Zuma had promised to set up permanent party structures after the election. But there is still no date set for the party’s first elective conference.

In a letter dated 25 July sent to the office of the secretary-general, Arthur Zwane, and copied to the office of the president, headed by Magasela Mzobe, the coordinators claimed that following the 29 May elections, there is a leadership vacuum in the province.

They said the entire leadership of the party in the province is now in the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg.

“It is with great concern and urgency that we address the current state of leadership in our province following the conclusion of elections and the appointment of all PIC members to the legislature.

“Since these appointments, the province of KwaZulu-Natal has been left without effective leadership in the political office.”

The coordinators argued that putting up a full-time leadership will help towards the 2026 local government elections.

The coordinators said despite their dedication and hard work, they “feel abandoned and disregarded”.

Among those who confirmed being signatories to the letter are Mthandeni Chonco from Uthukela and Bongani Msomi from Harry Gwala.

Zwane did not respond when Scrolla.Africa asked him to confirm whether or not his office had received the letter.
