Understanding the micro-retirement trend

The desire to take a break from work is something that we can all identify with. Regardless of your passion for your work, there are always moments when the stress becomes too much to handle, and the temptation to take a break becomes too strong.

What is micro-retiring

According to Investopedia, micro-retiring is “a way people use to maintain their sanity”. The new generation of workers is choosing to put their mental health above all else, even quitting their jobs. The term “micro-retiring” is what it is called.

The concept is used by the generation of new workers as a rejuvenating method to concentrate on and enhance their mental health. Compared to earlier generations, the young workers today prioritise their mental health to a point where, when things get hectic in their professional lives, they “micro- retire”.  

Taking an extended leave of absence from your job, typically for travel, can be rewarding, but not everyone has the luxury to do so. The main goal for all this is to rest, recharge, learn new skills, or pursue personal projects, providing a way to combat career burnout at a later stage.

How can this impact career prospects and financial stability?

The question of micro-retirement is how long the break should be. If you’re thinking of taking six months or a year, what are the career risks to that, and what should you consider before making that decision? 

The Conversation magazine reports that “frequent career breaks will put young professionals at a long-term disadvantage,” aa early momentum leads to higher salaries, faster promotions and greater financial stability. 

There is also the point where your future wages, as you attempt to re-enter the job market after a career break, may be lower than if you had an uninterrupted career. 

Although it is a way to improve mental health and avoid burnout, it is also not a win-win situation, as there are drawbacks to staying away for too long.
