Umkhonto Wesizwe Party Members To Be Sworn Into Parliament Next Week

The Parliament of South Africa has confirmed that members of the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party will indeed be sworn into the National Assembly.

This confirmation follows the MK party’s Members of Parliament (MPs) refusal to attend the swearing-in ceremony during the first post-elections sitting of the National Assembly on June 14.

In an official statement released on Saturday, Parliament announced that the MK party members would be sworn in on Tuesday, June 25, at the Goodhope Chamber of Parliament.

According to the statement, the oath of office will be administered to the 58 elected MK party members who were unavailable during the initial sitting.

The Constitution mandates that all members of the National Assembly must swear or affirm faithfulness to the Republic and obedience to the Constitution before they can begin their duties.

Parliament emphasized that the swearing-in of these original nominees from the MK party would be presided over by the Chief Justice or a judge designated by him, given that this is their inaugural swearing-in following the elections.

Parliament also highlighted that political parties have the provision to supplement or fill any vacancies on their candidates’ lists prior to the first swearing-in after elections.

This ensures that all designated seats are filled and that parties are fully represented. The MK party has indicated its intention to supplement their candidates’ list with a total of 21 members.

While the MK party’s national MPs did not attend the first sitting of the National Assembly, its National Council of Provinces did participate in their swearing-in last Saturday.

Earlier this week, the MK party informed the electoral court that it believed there was clear evidence of wide-scale fraud, rigging, and manipulation during the May 29 national and provincial elections, challenging the legitimacy of the election results.
