The Grammy Award-winning popstar, Tyla, is seemingly on a mission to retrieve all of Johannesburg’s exported gold, as she recently earned herself two nominations ahead of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards ceremony.
The awards evening is an annual event that shines a spotlight on some of the world’s greatest talents, from artists to behind-the-scenes creatives, celebrating and honouring them for the work they do in providing entertainment.
Known for producing smash hits like Push to Start and Bliss, Tyla has been a musical revelation since entering the international music scene, and by the looks of it, there is no slowing her down.
As the countdown begins to the much-anticipated awards evening, the nominees have recently been revealed, and the 23-year-old has once again found herself on the shortlist, securing two nominations in the categories Best Afrobeats and Best Choreography.
Last year, she became the first South African artist to win a VMA award; similarly, this was also in the category of Best Afrobeats, a genre that was introduced to the VMAs in 2023.
In her acceptance speech, she said, “This is just so special, but also bittersweet because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats.”
Tyla continued, “It’s a thing, and even though Afrobeats has run things and has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats.”
Meanwhile, the much-anticipated awards evening is set to take place on 7 September at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
