Tyla reveals how Wizkid jumped on ‘Dynamite’ when no one knew her

Tyla opens up about how her Wizkid collab ‘Dynamite’ came to life after three-year wait

South African Grammy winner Tyla is celebrating the release of her new EP We Wanna Party, which dropped on Friday.

One of the standout tracks, Dynamite, features Nigerian Afrobeats icon Wizkid, and fans are loving the surprise collaboration.

In an interview with Capital XTRA Breakfast on the day of the EP’s release, Tyla shared the journey behind Dynamite, revealing that the song had been in the works for years.

“With Dynamite, I made [it in] 2022,” she said, adding that another track, Mr. Media, was recorded in London with her usual crew.

“Yeah, it’s a banger. You know with bangers, I don’t really like explaining songs, like it says what it means. I’m excited about it. I feel like I needed to let out that one.”

Tyla said her collaboration with Wizkid was especially meaningful, as it came at a time when she was still largely unknown.

“It was very exciting, you know, ’cause at the time I was very new, like a lot of people didn’t know me, so I didn’t expect him to be down for a session. But he was. And he liked some of the stuff I played him that I made at the time,” she recalled.

They recorded Dynamite together, and for the next three years, Tyla held onto the demo, dancing to it in her room while praying it would someday be released.

“I was sitting on that demo for three years, just playing it and dancing in my room. Just praying to God like, ‘God, one day the song is gonna come out’. And it’s coming out,” she said.
