On Thursday morning, two separate accidents occurred in Durban, resulting in more than 30 people being injured. Emergency services were called to the scenes to provide assistance and investigate the causes of the accidents.
Accident at Che Guevara Road and Williams Road
At around 6 a.m., paramedics arrived at the corner of Che Guevara Road (Moore Road) and Williams Road in the Berea area. They found a minibus taxi overturned and windows shattered. Chaos ensued as injured patients lay scattered on the road.
Additional ambulances and Advanced Life Support Paramedics were dispatched to the scene to provide further assistance. Approximately 15 people sustained injuries of varying degrees, ranging from moderate to serious.
Accident near Warwick Junction
In another incident just a short distance away, a larger collision occurred near the Warwick Junction area. A truck lost control and collided with a bus and two minibus taxis on Old Dutch Road, close to the Engen Garage.
Firefighters were called to the scene to help free a severely entrapped passenger from the wreckage. Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to stabilize the patient while the Durban Fire Department used specialized equipment, such as the Jaws of Life, to extricate him from the vehicle. Once freed, the patient was carefully transferred to an awaiting ambulance.
The remaining 15 individuals involved in the accident suffered moderate to serious injuries. They were treated at the scene before being transported to nearby hospitals for further medical attention.
The police were present at both accident sites to conduct initial investigations into the causes of the crashes. A thorough examination will be carried out to determine the factors that led to these incidents.
Authorities are committed to ensuring the safety of the public and will take appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation. It is crucial for all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.
