  • Two people were arrested in Kimberley’s CBD for assaulting a female police constable during crime prevention duties, an attack captured on video.
  • The suspects face multiple charges, including assaulting a police official and resisting arrest, after the officer sustained minor injuries.
  • The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, strongly condemned the “senseless attack,” vowing that those who target officers will face the full force of the law.

A man and a woman have been arrested after a female police constable was physically attacked while carrying out crime prevention duties in the Kimberley central business district.

The assault, which was reportedly captured on video and has since been circulating on social media, shows a man assaulting the officer as she was executing her official duties. The incident has drawn a sharp rebuke from the Northern Cape’s highest-ranking police official.

Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in the Northern Cape, strongly condemned what she termed a “senseless attack.”

A police spokesperson confirmed that the constable sustained minor injuries and was immediately given medical attention. She is also receiving counselling and debriefing via the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Employee Health and Wellness unit.

The pair now face a series of serious charges, including assaulting a police official, resisting arrest, defeating the ends of justice, and malicious damage to property.

Lieutenant General Otola made it clear that such actions against law enforcement would not be tolerated.

“No one is above the law. Those who attack our officers will face the full might of the law,” she asserted. “An attack on police officials is a direct attack on the state.”

The arrests and the ensuing strong statement from the Provincial Commissioner underscore the police’s commitment to protecting its members and ensuring that those who target officers are brought to justice.
