Two people were injured after a light aircraft crashed near a business complex in Midrand on Tuesday afternoon.

The aircraft came down near Old Pretoria Road and New Road in the Glen Austin area, prompting a response from emergency services, police and fire crews.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services confirmed that both occupants of the aircraft sustained injuries.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said private ambulance services were treating the injured at the scene.

Grand Central Fire and the South African Police Service were also in attendance.

Mulaudzi said the aircraft had crashed into a business complex in the Ranges Fountain area.

The exact nature of the injuries was not immediately detailed in the information provided.

Cause of crash still unknown

Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the aircraft to go down.

Mulaudzi said the relevant authorities would investigate the incident.

Police also said further details would be released as more information became available.

No additional information was provided about the aircraft, its route or what happened in the moments before the crash.

Traffic heavily affected

The incident caused major delays near the intersection of New Road and Old Pretoria Main Road during the afternoon peak.

A separate motor vehicle accident was also reported in the same area, adding to the congestion.

That crash was later cleared, but metro police continued urging motorists to avoid the intersection.

Drivers were advised to use alternative routes while emergency teams worked to clear the aircraft from the scene.

Emergency operations remained active as authorities continued assessing the site and managing traffic around the affected area.

The investigation into the aircraft crash is expected to determine what led to the incident and whether any additional safety concerns need to be addressed.
