Former Swallows FC captain Goodman Mazibuko has outlined two important factors the current squad lacks from the previous generation.
During the playing days of Mazibuko, Swallows were known as Soweto giants, but now they are simply called a Soweto side.
The squad consisted of great players who made it to the national team and put a strong fight in every trophy they contested in.
However, the current squad seems to be failing to replicate what the previous generation was doing. Last season, the Dube Birds were almost relegated from the DStv Premiership.
They survived on the last day of the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs after defeating AmaTuks one nil.
SWALLOWS LACK LEADERS IN THE DRESSING ROOM
“The difference between us [previous generation] and this generation is huge. Honestly speaking, it’s different because during my time, I played with players that were leaders,” Mazibuko told FARPost.
“Even though I was the captain, most of the times I was the captain of the captains. Most of the times we would share ideas and it was easy for me to do the job as a captain.”
MATURE AND EXPERIENCED PLAYERS
“At the time, most of the players I played with were mature, you could tell they mean business [when they are on the field of play or at training].
“Most players I played with were experienced and stayed more than three years at the team. Even though there were few new players in the team, you could see they gelled very easy,” Mazibuko added.
In the current campaign, the Soweto side seems to be struggling again. They lay 14th on the log after accumulating 13 points from 12 encounters.
