The ANC-aligned South African Students Congress (Sasco) won the most seats in this week’s Tshwane University of Technology student representative council (SRC) elections.

The EFF Student Command, which won last year’s elections, was dealt a massive blow by the arrival of the newly formed Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Youth League.

They both won 10 seats each.

Sasco, with 12 seats, is set to ally with one or more of the smaller parties to govern the SRC effectively.

The voting across all five TUT campuses proceeded peacefully, but a fight broke out between Sasco and the EFF Student Command on the Pretoria campus at 4pm after voting ended.

MK Youth League members briefly joined Sasco’s side, throwing stones at the EFF Student Command members before stepping back. The fighting stopped when campus security arrived.

The final vote results are as follows: Sasco, 12; EFF Student Command and MK Youth League, 10 each; the IFP-aligned South African Democratic Students Movement, 4; Students’ Christian Organisation, 4; ActionSA, 2; and the TUT Students’ Association, 1.
