Venda Football Academy (VFA) were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup last 16 following a 4-3 defeat at home to University of Pretoria on penalties.

The visitors took an early lead through Thabang Sibanyoni in the 12th minute of the contest, but the home side were guilty of being very wasteful in front of goals.

Despite being wasteful in front of goals, VFA found themselves level less than four minutes after the restart with a goal from Banele Gama.

The game went into the half-time break with a 1-1 scoreline.

In the second stanza, Tuks had looked limited but the hosts’ profligacy hurt them as they scored another goal in the 65th minute by Rankoko Tau.

However, the unfazed University of Pretoria found an equaliser nine after the Vhembe-based side took a lead courtesy of Keegan Allan, who converted from the penalty spot.

Having played out a 2-all draw after the regulation time, the game went into extra time.

After 120 tiresome minutes, nothing could separate both sides as they played out to a 3-3 draw after the goals from Wonderboy Makhubu (Tuks) and Gerald Takwara (VFA).

In the end, it was AmaTuks who held their nerve to win 4-3 on spot-kicks and dump out Tlisane Motaung’s side of the Nedbank Cup at Thohoyandou Stadium on Friday afternoon.

As a result, Tuks are through to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup.
