Tshwane warned to brace for severe thunderstorms following Yellow Level 4 alert

Tshwane has been issued a Yellow Level 4 severe thunderstorm warning expected to last from Monday into Tuesday morning.
Heavy rain, hail, strong winds and lightning may cause localised flooding and traffic disruptions.
Residents are urged to follow safety precautions as officials remain on high alert.

Tshwane residents have been urged to brace themselves for severe thunderstorms on Monday, with conditions expected to persist until Tuesday morning.

This follows a Yellow Level 4 warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

“This evening, a sixty percent (60%) chance of rain is expected in Tshwane. The impact of severe thunderstorms may include heavy downpours that could lead to localised flooding, especially in low-lying areas,” said Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson, Nana Kgiba.

The thunderstorms may also bring large amounts of small hail, damaging winds and excessive lightning, which could disrupt traffic due to flooded roads.

Safety tips to consider during severe thunderstorms:

If possible, stay indoors and away from metal objects that conduct electricity, such as barbed wire fences and power lines.
Avoid outdoor activities like fishing or playing golf, as rods and golf clubs can attract lightning.
Do not seek shelter under isolated trees or tall objects during a storm.
Avoid crossing flooded low-lying roads, bridges and swollen streams.

Officials in the City of Tshwane continue to monitor weather developments and remain on high alert for any emergency-related incidents.
