The EFF, DA, and FF+ in Tshwane will address racist comments made during a council meeting on Thursday.

They want the courts and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to resolve the issue.

On Friday, the FF+ filed a hate speech complaint with the SAHRC.

On Monday, the EFF said they would report councillor Mark Surgeon to the commission and open an intimidation case against him for his racist actions.

During the council meeting, things got dramatic as councillors from the DA, ANC, EFF, and FF+ exchanged racist threats.

The ANC demanded an apology from Mayor Cilliers Brink for his statements about the ANC looting and mismanaging municipal resources.

Brink refused to apologise, saying the statements were not made in council.

Surgeon then allegedly threatened to assault the EFF’s councillor, Obakeng Ramabodu.

Ramabodu responded by saying he would be “happy to moer a boer, I want the blood of an Afrikaner”.

EFF caucus whip Godwin Ratikwana said the decision to report Surgeon was due to ongoing racist incidents in the city.

Meanwhile, FF+ caucus leader Grandi Theunissen said the EFF is trying to excuse Ramabodu’s hate speech.

“Ramabodu broke the law and must face the consequences. Being provoked doesn’t mean one can break the law.

“He apologised in council, which is an admission of the crime. We have reported the matter to the commission and will explore other legal options,” Theunissen said.
