Trevor Manuel, a former member of the African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee (NEC), has stated that his membership in the party has lapsed.

Manuel told Bongani Bingwa of 702 that his Damascus moment came when former ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe called him a free agent after he said former President Jacob Zuma should pay back the money used to upgrade his Nkandla homestead.

He goes on to say that the Gupta plane landing at Waterkloof Air Force Base was a total turnoff and confirmed his decision.

“I am not a member of the party… I think close monitoring of the events post Polokwane 2007, even though I remained a member of the NEC for five more years and I remained a member of the cabinet until 2014, the magic, the stance of moral leadership that had shaped the ANC through my youth was gone. I think the event of Polokwane took that away,” he said.

Manuel claims that he was not involved in the formation of the Congress of the People and that the media should not be abused.

Manuel claims he is unconcerned about what broadcaster JJ Tabane said about him, but he is concerned about his integrity. It took him years to build his integrity, only to have it shattered by Tabane.

Tabane stated during an interview on the YouTube channel The Hustlers Corner that the former finance minister was involved in the formation of the Congress of the People.
