A 10-year-old boy has unfortunately lost his life after being hit by a goal post at Reagile Primary School in Tembisa.
The incident occurred on Monday, 16 February 2026, reportedly during break time. A group of learners, including the deceased, were playing around the soccer posts at the school when a goal post reportedly fell on the learner, resulting in severe injuries.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says, despite all efforts to resuscitate the learner, he sadly succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased by emergency personnel at the scene.
“Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. The department will also conduct an enquiry into this matter,” said Mabona.
The Department has dispatched its Psycho-Social Support Unit to the school to provide the necessary counselling and support to learners, educators, and the bereaved family during this extremely difficult time.
Meanwhile, the Department is in the process of finalising the appointment of a law firm to probe the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a Grade R learner from Bernard Isaacs Primary School in Coronationville, Johannesburg.
“According to information at our disposal, the incident reportedly occurred on Monday, 2 February 2026, where the learner allegedly sustained injuries on the school premises. The learner sadly passed away after being hospitalised later that day.
