  • Eleven people, including a school child, died in a truck and taxi collision on the R102 near Lotus Park in Durban.
  • Six other people were injured, while the truck driver survived and was taken to safety.
  • Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Eleven people, including a school child, have been killed in a truck and taxi crash in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The accident occurred on the R102 near Lotus Park, south of Durban, on Thursday morning, 29 January 2026. It is understood that six other people were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Witnesses said the truck driver, who survived the accident, was taken to a place of safety. They further alleged that the truck driver made a U-turn, resulting in a head-on collision.

The MEC for Human Settlements and Transport in the province, Siboniso Duma, is currently on the scene of the accident.

“We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

“I have assigned a team from my office to locate the families of the victims. We will do everything in our power to ensure that they receive the necessary support,” said Duma.

Duma has mandated the RTI team to work with the Durban Metro Police and SAPS as part of an investigation to establish the cause of the crash.

This horrific crash occurred after KZN recorded a historic 18% decrease in road fatalities during the festive season.
