A nine-month-old baby and two women were killed in a targeted shooting in Athlone, Cape Town, on Tuesday night, 18 February 2026.
The attack, which also left two men hospitalised with gunshot wounds, has sparked a high-priority investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The victims have been identified as a 25-year-old woman, a 36-year-old woman, and the young child.
Western Cape police confirmed that the motive for the attack remains unclear, though preliminary evidence suggests three suspects were involved in the shooting
Detectives are currently scouring the area for leads, and the provincial police command has issued a stern condemnation of the violence.
Authorities have assured the Athlone community that all available resources are being deployed to apprehend those responsible for the “unequivocal” act of violence.
