Traffic Department Robbed By Armed Bogus Contractors

Police in Komani (Queenstown), Eastern Cape, are investigating an armed robbery after municipal officials were held at gunpoint at the offices of the Enoch Mgijima Municipality Traffic Department.

Two municipal employees and four members of a contractor working at the Municipal offices were held at gunpoint by four armed individuals on Friday, June 17 at around 10 a.m., according to the Enoch Mgijima Municipality.

The robbers made off with an undisclosed quantity of money, currently believed to be around R70 000, according to the Municipality. There were no firearms fired and no casualties, but the robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of money, currently estimated to be around R70 000.

Police were called and the situation was turned over to them. The police spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni, reiterated that unknown men entered the premises pretending to come for renovations.

“While they were being attended to, all four drew firearms and held employees at gunpoint and demanded cash. The suspects managed to steal undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene, “Captain Mdleleni said.

She also said that the suspects are still at large and urged anyone with information that could lead to their arrest to contact the investigating officer, Lieutenant Colonel Ntombekhaya Mahlanza, at 082 319 7944 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Tip-offs can also be submitted through the My SAPS App.

The municipality has also stated that the affected employees received professional assistance following the incident, and the contractor is also looking after their employees.
