The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has arrested 13 additional traffic officers in Mpumalanga, bringing the total number of suspects picked up so far to 39.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane confirmed the arrests, stating that the officers were caught in a joint operation by the RTMC’s National Anti-Corruption Unit, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, and Mpumalanga-based Crime Intelligence.
The suspects were arrested in various towns, including Nelspruit, Kabokweni, KaNyamazane, Hazyview, Barberton, White River, and Calcutta.
Some have appeared in court and were granted bail, ranging from R2,500 to R10,000 with conditions to surrender their passports and not leave their hometowns without permission.
RTMC CEO advocate Makhosini Msibi welcomed the arrests, emphasising that corruption within traffic law enforcement will not be tolerated. He praised the investigating officers and urged them to continue until all corrupt officials are removed.
Msibi noted that corrupt officers undermine public confidence in traffic law enforcement, leading to avoidable road crashes and fatalities.
On 6 September RTMC officials arrested 14 other officers allegedly involved in corruption activities.
The RTMC encourages the public to report traffic fraud and corruption via [email protected] or WhatsApp 083 293 7989.
