Thabisile Ndlela, the controversial municipal manager of the ANC-led Umdoni (Umzinto) local municipality, and Mahendra Chandulal, the chief financial officer, have resigned.
Their resignations follow months of pickets by ratepayers and employees complaining about poor service delivery and working conditions due to Ndlela’s alleged iron-fist rule.
The protests forced the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, to intervene and crack the whip by telling the council to implement all the forensic reports they have been sitting on for years.
Ndlela’s letter of resignation is dated 24 September. She said she would serve her month’s notice and leave the municipality on 24 October.
“Thank you for the support and that of council during my stay at the municipality,” her resignation letter reads in part.
Chandulal sent a similar letter to the council, saying he would stay to serve his month-long notice, ending on 25 October.
The council has yet to ratify the resignations and inform the cooperative governance and traditional affairs department as stipulated in municipal guidelines.
