Top Two Lose In Motsepe Foundation Championship

There were many upsets in the battle for promotion in the Motsepe Foundation Championship this weekend, with Cape Town Spurs and Polokwane City both losing.

The weekend’s action began on Friday when Magesi picked up a confidence-boosting 1-0 away win at La Masia. The same could be said for inconsistent AmaTuks, who won 1-0 on the road at Platinum City Rovers.

Another team who had been struggling of late continued the 1-0 away win trend on Saturday, as JDR Stars won at Baroka.

But Uthongathi and All Stars broke that sequence as they both picked up good 3-0 home victories. All Stars dented Hungry Lions’ hopes of reaching the playoffs, and kept their hopes alive, as they moved within one point of the Northern Cape team. Uthongathi meanwhile added to relegation-threatened Tshakhuma’s woes.

Casric Stars could have moved top with a win, but they were held away in a 1-1 draw at bottom-placed Black Leopards, who are now just one point behind TTM, although still nine points from safety.

CT Spurs, who only moved to the top in midweek, lost 2-1 to Pretoria Callies at home, while Venda Football Academy scored a late winner to beat Polokwane City 3-2 in the derby.

Despite the defeat, though, Spurs stayed at the top but missed a chance to open a gap to new second-placed Casric, while Polokwane City dropped into third.
