Top prosecutors join NPA to fight state capture

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has strengthened its team by hiring two top prosecutors, advocates Paul Pretorius and Matthew Chaskalson, to help with state capture cases.

Paul Pretorius was the lead investigator in the State Capture Commission, and Matthew Chaskalson led investigations in both the Marikana Commission and the Zondo Commission.

They joined the NPA after the prosecuting authority lost some of its top prosecutors during the infamous “nine wasted years” of Jacob Zuma as president.

Since President Cyril Ramaphosa took office, over 1,000 new prosecutors have been hired.

Ramaphosa has promised to fight corruption, but he has been criticised for not acting against senior ANC members involved in dodgy dealings, such as Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe and Deputy President Paul Mashatile.
