The DStv eKasi Champ of Champs has reached the semi-final stage and naturally there’s been several players who’ve turned heads in Soweto and beyond this month.

The DSTV eKasi Champ of Champs is opportunity for South Africa to enjoy a televised commemoration in respect of football and youth.

The three weekend long football tournament is befitting for the ambit of youth football and a celebration of the lives lost in South Africa’s long walk to freedom.

This year National Youth Day and Youth Month are being celebrated under the theme:

“The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke: Growing youth employment for an inclusive and transformed society.”

The exciting football on show is celebrated with the theme of liberation and the contribution of youth in South Africa’s rich history.

As this year’s DStv eKasi Champ of Champs is heating up, Free Agent FC and Phaphama FC will meet in the first semi-final, while Swidwi Wodwa FC and Covid-19 FC will meet in the second semi-final to battle it out for a place in the final of the coveted title.

While in the plate knock-out stage Ramatlaohle FC, Black Poison FC (the team famously coached by Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena), Soweto Super United and Ramokoka United make up the final four.

And it was always going to be the players of the main cup that stood out, with iDiski Times looking at some top performers below:

Eddy Sikalane — Swidi Wodwa — Jersey no.12

Sikalane is very comfortable on the ball with his right foot, takes on players with ease. He is a good crosser of the ball, even though he can still improve on his shooting. He has a very good first touch, which sets him apart, and is very much aware of his surroundings before receiving the ball.

Neo Kekana — Swidi Wodwa — Jersey no.5

Kekana is an extremely good passer of the ball — both short and long passes. The diagonal passes of the left centre-back are being described as “out of this world”. Even though he is short for a centre-back, his positioning is excellent. He never shies away from receiving the ball at all. He is more of a sweeper type of centre-back due to his ability on the ball.

Ofentse Dube — Phaphama FC — Jersey no.10

Dube, a dreadlocked midfielder, is clearly coming from a background of development with a first touch and skill that’s refined from the rest.

Bongani Diniso — Covid 19 — Jersey no.8

Diniso is really good in midfield. He knows his story and the amount of people raving about him tells all you need to know about how impressive he has been so far. He has a first touch to kill and a great vision. So far, he has pulled the strings for one of the surprise packages early on.

Bongani Nana — Swidi Wodwa — Jersey no.3

Nana has been consistent from the left side, he’s closed down everything. He’s also been able to initiate attacks from the flank with his technical ability and tireless work-rate.

Bheki Nkabinde — Phaphama FC — Jersey no.5

Nkabinde has been solid at the back for his team, they didn’t score much but they didn’t concede either and he was the one holding things down and showing real leadership and communication for his side.

Honourable mentions:

  • Goodman Tshabalala — Covid FC — no.10
  • Mpho Modise – Swidi Wodwa – no.8
  • Lwandle Mthombeni — Back Poison — no.7

The semi-finals of the DStv eKasi Champ of Champs will take this coming weekend, 24 and 25 June at Moletsane Fields in Soweto, while the finals of both the main competition and the plate section will take place 1 and 2 July. The plate and the final will be hosted at Dobsonville Stadium.
