The Ekurhuleni metro police chief, Jabulani Isaac Mapiyeye, has been placed on precautionary suspension following serious allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

The suspension was issued on 25 September after a metro police officer accused Mapiyeye of sexual harassment.

The female officer, aged 40, claims the misconduct began in October 2023 when Mapiyeye allegedly propositioned her in exchange for a job promotion. After refusing, she says the harassment continued, leading her to file a formal complaint in July.

She also secured a temporary protection order against Mapiyeye, preventing him from contacting her until the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court makes a final decision on 4 October.

Ekurhuleni has appointed an independent investigator to look into the allegations. The council has given the investigator 30 days to present a report on the findings.

Mapiyeye was granted an additional two weeks to prepare his defence before the court hearing. The case is being closely followed by the public, with gender-based violence activists and political parties supporting the suspension.

Ekurhuleni’s city manager, Imogen Mashazi, will oversee the investigation in accordance with the regulations for senior managers.
