Working from home has become the norm for many people, offering flexibility and convenience. However, without healthy routines and boundaries, remote work can quickly become overwhelming.
Avoiding these common mistakes can help you stay productive, reduce stress and maintain a better work-life balance.

1. Not having a dedicated workspace
Working from your bed or couch may seem comfortable, but it can reduce focus and blur the line between work and personal life. According to HR.com, working from your bed also comes with the temptation to take a nap or divert attention to social media instead of working. Create a designated workspace that encourages productivity and minimises distractions.
2. Skipping regular breaks
Many remote workers spend hours glued to their screens. Taking short breaks every 60 to 90 minutes can improve concentration, reduce eye strain and boost overall well-being.
3. Working without set hours
One of the biggest work-from-home mistakes is allowing work to spill into evenings and weekends. Establish clear working hours and stick to them to avoid burnout.
4. Ignoring ergonomics
Poor posture and an unsuitable workstation can lead to neck, back and wrist pain. Invest in an ergonomic chair, position your screen at eye level and use proper desk support where possible.

5. Trying to multitask constantly
Switching between emails, meetings and household chores may feel productive, but it often increases stress and decreases efficiency. Focus on one task at a time for better results.
6. Neglecting social interaction
Remote work can be isolating. As reported by Business Insider, with no colleagues in your living room or home office, socialising with your peers can be a challenge and make remote work pretty lonely. Stay connected with colleagues through regular check-ins and make time to socialise with friends or family outside of work.
7. Forgetting to switch off
When your office is at home, it’s easy to stay “always on.” End your workday with a routine, such as closing your laptop or taking a short walk, to help your mind transition into personal time.
Working from home doesn’t have to be stressful. By setting boundaries, prioritising your health and creating sustainable habits, you can enjoy the benefits of remote work while protecting your mental and physical well-being.
