Technical expertise can help you secure a job, but strong people skills can determine how successfully you work with others, handle challenges and progress in your career.

Also known as interpersonal or soft skills, people skills include communication, empathy, teamwork, active listening and emotional intelligence. Here are five reasons they matter in today’s workplace.

1. Improved communication

Clear communication helps colleagues understand expectations, avoid unnecessary misunderstandings and work towards shared goals.

Listening is equally important: employees who listen carefully are better equipped to respond appropriately, give useful feedback and build professional relationships.

2. Strengthened teamwork

Most modern workplaces depend on collaboration. Whether you are working in an office, remotely or across different departments, the ability to cooperate with people who have different perspectives is essential.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies leadership and social influence, resilience, flexibility and agility among employers’ key core skills.

3. Conflict resolution

Disagreements are inevitable when people work together. Strong people skills make it easier to remain calm, understand different viewpoints and address problems respectfully. According to The South African College of Applied Psychology, if everyone had better interpersonal skills, we wouldn’t struggle so much with conflict.

Rather than allowing conflict to damage relationships, effective communication and empathy can help teams find practical solutions.

4. Trust and relationships

Trust is the foundation of productive professional relationships. Being respectful, reliable and considerate helps colleagues and managers feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions and giving feedback. Over time, these behaviours can contribute to a healthier workplace culture.

5. Career growth

People skills are increasingly valuable as workplaces evolve. The World Economic Forum reports that empathy and active listening are considered core skills by half of surveyed employers, while leadership and social influence have increased significantly in importance.

Ultimately, developing people skills is an investment in both workplace performance and long-term career development. Technical knowledge may open the door, but knowing how to work effectively with people can help you thrive once you are inside.
