As the nation gears itself up in celebration of Mandela Day, it is perhaps the perfect occasion to explore the life of the historical global figure through the lens of multiple films created in honour of his fight for liberation.

International Mandela Day, celebrated on the 18th of July, is a day on which the world proudly celebrates the life of one of the most renowned political leaders of our time.

Each year, this day honours the late South African president by dedicating 67 minutes to community service to reflect on his 67 years of public service. The day not only reminds the nation about the journey we have travelled from our dark and troubled past, but also encourages people to take action and make a positive impact in the world.

It is a day where corporations, sports professionals, and non-governmental organisations can make themselves useful towards serving a greater cause.

While community service might be the overall theme of the day, what you do after that 67 minutes could be equally as important.

Fortunately, we have a few recommendations on how you can remain entertained.

Here are five iconic movies you can watch to help grow your understanding of just how instrumental the late Nelson Mandela was in ensuring South Africa’s liberation from apartheid.

Long Walk to Freedom

Invictus

Goodbye Bafana

Mandela & De Klerk

Winnie Mandela

Based on real life experiences, each of these films teach valuable lessons about leadership, forgiveness, and the power of hope in the face of adversity.

They showcase Madiba’s commitment to justice and equality, as well as his unwavering belief that a nation consisting of all races and cultures can unite and thrive.
