Title chasers stumble as Magesi maintain their lead

The early title chasers in the Motsepe Foundation Championship were made to eat humble pie after dropping valuable points in a weekend of surprising results that saw leaders Magesi FC maintain their position at the top of the standings.

Magesi, who are enjoying a promising start to their campaign, were held to a goalless draw by North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute, recording their second consecutive draw after sharing the spoils 1-1 with Hungry Lions in their previous match.

Despite dropping two points at home, Magesi remain firmly in control of the race with 14 points from six matches, having recorded four victories and two draws without suffering a defeat.

However, the Limpopo-based outfit will be aware that their rivals are eager to close the gap as the competition gathers momentum.

Real Native FC, who started the weekend in second place, also suffered a setback after going down 2-0 away to Hungry Lions.

The defeat left Native on 12 points, two behind the leaders, after six matches played.

Hungry Lions, meanwhile, celebrated an important victory that could provide the confidence they need to climb the standings as the season progresses.

Highbury FC also dropped points after being held to a 2-2 draw by Orbit College, missing an opportunity to strengthen their position among the early promotion contenders.

Gomora United were among the weekend’s winners, recording a 2-1 victory over Upington City to move up the standings and strengthen their early-season ambitions.

The result provided a timely boost for Gomora, who will be hoping to build on their victory in the coming fixtures.

Meanwhile, Leicesterford City suffered a setback after losing 2-0 away to Pretoria University, a result that saw them surrender ground in the tightly contested race near the top of the table.

With several teams separated by only a handful of points, the latest results have underlined how quickly the standings can change in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Magesi remain the team to catch, but their rivals will be hoping to take advantage of any further slip-ups as the battle for promotion intensifies.
