Tinkler – What I Told Mayo Amid Goalscoring Drought

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has revealed what he told last season’s joint-top goalscorer Khanyisa Mayo amid his early goalscoring drought.

Mayo finished last season with 12 goals, making him the joint-top goalscorer alongside Mamelodi Sundowns forward Peter Shalulile.

But with four games already played in 2023/24, Mayo is yet to score a goal in the new campaign.

Tinkler mentioned that he can only help him by encouraging and motivate him as he understands that the pressure in mounting on him.

“I think there’s anxiety and there’s pressure, he feels pressure because he knows he was top goalscorer, he knows the expectation is he needs to be scoring,” Tinkler said after City’s 1-0 defeat to Sekhukhune United.

“So what I try and do is relieve that pressure, as I try and during the week to talk to him and say to him, ‘you know, don’t force [it], when you force, it makes it a lot harder, just simplify your game, show a little bit of calmness and be patient that will come’.

“So that’s the little bit of help that I can try and give them but ultimately on the game they’ve got to adapt, they’ve got to think for themselves, they got to make those right decisions or those wrong decisions. I can’t be making those decisions for them.

“So if he’s in a bit of a rut right now, he’s got to find a way to get himself out and my job is to try and try and help him get up.”
