Tinkler – Sundowns Are An Exceptional Team

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler says they will look to keep their unbeaten run of 2022 when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in a crucial DStv Premiership fixture this evening.

Third-placed City are yet to lose a league game this year, but facing the log leaders at home will not be an easy task.

A lot is at stake in tonight’s game, with City still hoping to chase down Royal AM, who are currently in second spot. While Sundowns will know that a positive result in the game will secure them the league title with games to spare. Masandawana are currently on 57 points, and mathematically they need just one point from the game to wrap up the league.

Tinkler said he knows will be a tough game, as it has been in their two previous meetings this season. In the league match in Cape Town, the two teams played to a goalless draw, while they also met in the MTN8 Final, when Sundowns won in a penalty shoot-out.

“Right now our focus is obviously the up-and-coming match against Mamelodi Sundowns,” Tinkler said to the club’s media department ahead of the game.

“Tough game, because obviously they’re an exceptional team, the brand of football they play, Shalulile, on fire at the moment, a lot of goals.

“They’re a team that’s obviously difficult to break down, got a very, very good defensive record. So truthfully, we’re going to have to be at our very, very best if we want to go there and compete and collect maximum points.

“But we do that with a lot of confidence and self-belief in ourselves. So far against them, we’ve actually had a pretty good record, and we produce good games, both in the league and obviously in the cup (MTN8 final) against them, and obviously, this time, we hope that we can come out on the winning end.

“Obviously losing in the cup, the way we did against them was tough, on penalties, and then we drew with them at home.

“So I think they have a lot of respect for us, we have a lot of respect for them, and hopefully, we can produce a good football match against them and look to try and collect maximum points. I think that would be a fantastic achievement.

“We’d like to try and keep our unbeaten record so far in the league this second half of the season. And right now the boys are all highly motivated, everybody’s available, and everybody’s fighting for that starting eleven berth, and truth be told at this stage I’m still scratching my head about who am I playing and who am I not playing?

“Everybody’s really raising their hand which is exactly what we want to see from the squad.”
