Tinkler Hails ‘Exceptional’ City As Top Three Looms

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler heaped praise on his side after their 1-0 win over Maritzburg United moved them into contention for CAF inter-club qualification spots.

The Citizens are on a run of seven games without defeat now as they peak towards some impressive form at the business end of the season.

Following a 5-1 drubbing of relegation-threatened Baroka, they secured a valuable three points away from home at the Harry Gwala Stadium thanks to Khanyisa Mayo’s first-half penalty.

“I was very happy with the performance of the team, I think tactically we got it spot on, we didn’t really allow them any space in behind, our back four was extremely solid throughout the first half and we created the better chances,” Tinkler said.

“Tassie and Nodada had great chances, we got the penalty just before half-time and I thought the collective performance in the first half was exceptional. They grew frustrated and made changes in the second half with how they played.

“We could have been better in the second half but I don’t think we had a save to make. We looked threatening going forward and then we had a missed penalty.

“But I’m proud of everyone, the guys who came on made a difference, helped us to contain them. Exceptional performance.”

The Citizens are level on points with third-placed Kaizer Chiefs – who have a game in hand while they are four points off second-placed Royal AM – who have played one game more.
