Tinkler Furious With SA Referees

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler lashed out on the match officials after his side’s Nedbank Cup last-32 exit.

City played a goalless draw with Royal AM on Sunday evening and went on to lose in the game 4-3 in the penalty shootout.

Tinkler, though, believed his side had two penalty shouts during the game but none of them were given by the match official Michael Mosemeng, who was in charge of the game.

After the match, the former Bafana Bafana international didn’t hold back, mistakes of referees can cost coaches their jobs and they also play a big role on player’s performance – without any real accountability or repercussions after mistakes.

“How you’ve lost, understand that, how you’ve lost. Because the way I see it, there should be only one winner tonight and sometimes we hide these things,” he said.

“This is the harsh reality and the one that has to deal with it is me. I have to deal with it.

“Referees make mistakes but they don’t have to deal with anything. I have to deal with the repercussions. I have to deal, first with the chairman because we lost when we shouldn’t have lost.

“I have to deal with the players, the disappointment from the players. People don’t see that side. They just go, ‘Ow! No they lost’. But how did they lose? And why did they lose? Start asking those questions.

“I think we need to be doing a lot more when it comes to our officiating. Because it’s costing coaches because they being judged on mistakes of referees maybe I should be talking about this but I’m talking.”

Tinkler was also still infuriated about his side’s exit from the CAF Confederations when they were denied a clear penalty in dying minutes against USM Alger.

He said, the only way out that he can see is making referees in South Africa professionals.
