Thulani Mtsweni credits signature look to his success

Thulani Mtsweni, an iconic actor known for his various roles in top South African productions, opened up about how his recognisable look (a half-bald head and beard) helped elevate his career.

Signature impandla look opened doors for Thulani Mtsweni

Mtsweni’s look has set him apart from many actors in the industry and has helped secure many roles. The 39-year-old actor spoke to Daily Sun, saying he doesn’t see himself shaving his beard anytime soon, unless for a top-paying role.

He recounts his auditioning days at the beginning of his career. Mtsweni would go into his auditions with a clean-shaven head and beard. He would consistently get turned down until the time he chose not to shave anymore.

He explains that once he stopped shaving, he started booking many roles, claiming his unique look made him unique and memorable.

Thulani Mtsweni’s impressive career

Mtsweni shot to fame in 2017 with his role on Isidingo as Bhekizizwe Sibiya. This was one of many roles in a thriving career. He then appeared in top South African TV shows, such as Isibaya, Gomora, Black Gold and Isiphetho: Destiny, establishing himself as a familiar face on South African television.

The actor then told the above-mentioned publication about acting in a movie, thanking Chris Q Radebe for giving him the opportunity. He shared that it was his first time playing a lead role in a movie, as he usually booked TV dramas and sitcoms.

Mtsweni further explained that people never get to see him in similar roles as the above and that had he not got this opportunity, viewers would not have been able to see this side of his acting abilities.

He stars alongside Wiseman Ncube and Jo-Ann Reyneke in the independent feature film Shut Up, Men Are Talking!, which recently aired on DStv channel 113’s MovieRoom. The movie was produced, written, and directed by Radebe.
