Three reasons why Kaizer Chiefs will not win the league this season

Kaizer Chiefs started the season strongly, but it now appears they are merely pretenders to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title.

After playing 13 matches, Amakhosi currently sit in fourth place, four points behind their rivals, Orlando Pirates.

At one point, after three rounds of matches, Chiefs were nine points clear of the Buccaneers. However, poor form and a change in coaching have led the Glamour Boys to drop points and fall down the standings.

With 17 matches remaining, the 2025 Nedbank Cup winners can still contend for the league title, but it is highly unlikely.

Here are three reasons why Kaizer Chiefs may not win the league:

Unsettled Lineup

The starting eleven for Chiefs changes frequently, with only Miguel Ignacio and Brandon Petersen guaranteed to be in the lineup. Players like Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze are yet to find their place in the team, and this inconsistency could cost them points this season

Lack of quality from the bench

To win the league, Kaizer Chiefs need a strong bench if the starting eleven struggles; three or four impactful players from the bench should be able to change the outcome of matches.

In the Nedbank Cup final, Amakhosi secured the win thanks to their substitutes, but this season, that level of impact has not been seen. Players like Mfundo Vilakazi have failed to deliver results.

Coaching challenges

Although the two co-coaches have pushed the club in a positive direction, they are unlikely to compete with Mamelodi Sundowns and Pirates this season.

A top-five finish seems to be the best they can hope for. Both coaches worked with Nasreddine Nabi in the previous season but have not managed to elevate the team to new heights. It is unrealistic to expect a magical turnaround in the second half of the season.

If Kaizer Chiefs aspire to win the league, they need to strengthen their squad and bring in quality players and leadership. They have struggled in the CAF Confederation Cup this season as well.

Where will Amakhosi finish?
