Three Police Officers Arrested For ‘Stealing’ Confiscated Illicit Cigarettes

Three police officers are expected to appear in court this week after they were arrested for failing to open a case and register illicit cigarettes they had confiscated.

The three police officers, who range in age from 35 to 38, were detained on September 30, 2022, on suspicion of engaging in corrupt behavior in July in the Limpopo province’s Zaaiplaas policing area, outside of Groblersdal.

According to Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, spokesperson for the South African Police Service, the three constables assigned to the Zaaiplaas Police Station were detained after they failed to file a report and register illegal cigarettes they had seized at a nearby filling station on Tuesday, July 12, 2022.

“The Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit arrested the suspects in Polokwane after investigations indicated that they never registered the case and the cigarettes.The three officers,Vusi Sepoto, (35), Mulase Jakonea Lamola,(37), and Malose Oscar Makhafola,(38), will appear again in the  Groblersdal Magistrate’s on 7 October for bail application,” Mojapelo said.
