- The court rejected the accused’s defence and imposed the maximum sentence.
Three men in Gauteng, aged between 22 and 24, have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 17-year-old girl.
Wanico Zain Brown, Ishan Marvin Buys, and Cravan Shaun Liberty were each handed life sentences by the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 24 March 2026.
According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the trio has also been declared unfit to possess firearms.
Mahanjana said the accused and the victim met in September 2018 at a party in Eersterust, Pretoria. They later went to one of the accused’s residences, where alcohol and drugs were consumed.
“The men then simultaneously raped her by penetrating her mouth, anus, and vagina. The following morning at around 06:00, the three men chased the victim out of the house. On her way home, she told a relative of a friend what had happened and immediately reported the matter to the police,” said Mahanjana.
The trio was arrested at their homes on 6 September 2018. During court proceedings, they pleaded not guilty, claiming the encounter was consensual and requested a lesser sentence, citing they were first-time offenders.
The State opposed this, telling the court that the victim had sustained vaginal injuries and had been taken advantage of while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Magistrate Kallie Bosch agreed with the State, describing the crime as heinous and degrading.
